Mesh vs Cushion Chair — Which is Better for Malaysia's Weather?

If you've been shopping for an ergonomic chair in Malaysia, chances are you've come across two main types — mesh chairs and cushion chairs. Both look great. Both claim to be comfortable. But which one is actually better for you?

The honest answer is: it depends. But for most Malaysians, one tends to win out — and we'll explain exactly why.

What is a Mesh Chair?

A mesh chair uses a breathable woven fabric for the seat and/or backrest. The material is tightly stretched across the frame, allowing air to flow through freely while still providing firm support.

Mesh chairs have become extremely popular in Malaysia over the past few years, and for good reason. Our climate is hot and humid all year round — and sitting for 8 hours a day in a non-breathable chair means heat builds up fast, especially around your back and seat area.

Pros of mesh chairs:

  • Highly breathable — great for Malaysia's humid weather
  • Stays cool even without air conditioning
  • Durable — good mesh doesn't sag or deform over time
  • Supportive and firm, which encourages better posture

Cons of mesh chairs:

  • Can feel firmer than cushion initially
  • Not as soft for those who prefer a plush feel

What is a Cushion Chair?

A cushion chair uses foam padding for the seat, and sometimes the backrest too. The quality of the foam makes a big difference — cheap sponge foam will flatten out quickly, while high-density molded injection foam (like what we use in our Essential series) holds its shape and provides consistent support.

Cushion chairs tend to feel softer and more comfortable right out of the box, making them popular for people who prioritise that immediate plush feeling.

Pros of cushion chairs:

  • Softer and more comfortable feel from day one
  • Great for air-conditioned offices
  • Often more affordable

Cons of cushion chairs:

  • Less breathable — can get warm during long sitting sessions
  • Lower quality foam can flatten over time

So Which is Better for Malaysia?

Here's the honest breakdown:

Choose mesh if:

  • You work in a room without air conditioning or with poor airflow
  • You tend to feel warm or sweaty easily
  • You sit for long hours (6–10 hours a day)
  • You want something durable that holds up over years of use

Choose cushion if:

  • You work in a well air-conditioned office all day
  • You prefer a softer, plusher feel
  • You're on a tighter budget

For most Malaysians working from home or in offices without consistent air conditioning — mesh is the better choice. The breathability difference is genuinely significant when you're sitting for hours in 28–34°C weather.

That said, if your office is always cold and you prefer a softer seat, a quality cushion chair like our Essential series is a fantastic option too.

What About the Backrest?

One thing most people overlook is that many chairs use mesh for the backrest but cushion for the seat (or vice versa). At SPACE, our Signature Mesh series uses full mesh for both the seat and backrest — which gives maximum breathability throughout.

Our Essential Cushion series uses high-density molded injection foam (IMF) for the seat, which is significantly better than regular sponge. It doesn't flatten over time and provides consistent support.
